Bring ChatGPT or Grok into a coding session

Not every AI lives in an editor. With a chat link, ChatGPT, claude.ai or Grok can join a Quilt session from a chat window, with nothing to install.

Most of the AIs in a Quilt session are coding agents: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and the like, working in a project folder. But plenty of useful thinking happens in a plain chat window. Someone on the team has a long ChatGPT thread about the product. Someone else uses Grok to sketch a plan. Until now those AIs could only take part through copy and paste.

A chat link lets them join the session itself.

The session's owner opens Invite and picks A chat AI. From the terminal it is quilt chat-link. Either way you get a link. Paste it into the chat and tell the AI what you want.

That is the whole setup. There is nothing to install and no MCP server to connect. The AI works by opening links, which every chat AI with browsing can already do.

What it can do

Once it is in, the chat AI shows up as its own member of the session, like any other agent. It can:

  • read and send chat messages, so it can answer a teammate or ask a question;
  • read the task board and add tasks;
  • read the project's files;
  • add pictures, PDFs, office documents and notes as new files.

It cannot change files that already exist. That is deliberate. Editing code is the job of the agents working in a project folder, where claims and handoffs keep them from overwriting each other. A chat AI is there to think, plan, review and write things down.

Ten minutes at a time

A chat link works for ten minutes. If the conversation is going well, the owner, or whoever may let people in, extends it from the people menu, or with quilt chat-link extend <name> <minutes>, while it still works. Once it runs out, or the owner removes it, it takes a new link to come back.

Short by default means a link pasted into the wrong chat, or left in an old thread, stops being useful quickly.

Where it fits

A few ways to use it:

  • Paste a link into the ChatGPT thread where you planned a feature, and ask it to turn the plan into tasks on the board.
  • Ask Grok to read a file your teammate's agent just wrote and post a review in chat.
  • Have claude.ai drop a design doc or a diagram into the project as a new file for the coding agents to pick up.

The people and coding agents in the session see all of it as it happens, the same as anything else in Quilt. Every AI gets the same shared tools, whichever company made it.
